QR Menu & Ordering for Restaurants
A QR menu and ordering system lets a customer scan a code at their table, browse the menu, and place an order that lands instantly on a kitchen screen. We haven't delivered this exact flow for a restaurant yet; we adapt the order management from Boon Fresh and the real-time notification infrastructure from Ambalaj Cini to a restaurant's workflow.
Where restaurants lose time in the ordering process
When server headcount stays fixed during a rush, order-taking slows down and customers wait impatiently.
When an order is written on paper and relayed verbally to the kitchen, items get misheard or dropped.
When the menu changes, printed copies fall out of date and a customer tries to order something no longer sold.
How we work
The bottleneck in a restaurant's ordering process is usually not staff but information flow: a customer's request travels to the server, the server's note travels to the kitchen verbally or on paper, and every handoff carries delay and error risk. A QR menu and ordering system removes these intermediate steps — the customer enters the order directly into the system, which drops it onto the kitchen screen instantly. This doesn't just add speed; order capacity increases even with fixed staffing during a rush, because the time spent taking orders shifts to serving customers. On the menu side, an item that's run out can be pulled instantly, so no one tries to order something that no longer exists.
We've built the pieces of this system separately in different projects: at Boon Fresh we built order management and tracking for a fresh-food delivery platform; in Ambalaj Cini's back-office we built infrastructure that sends real-time web push and email alerts to both customer and team the moment an order, payment, or stock status changes. A QR menu and kitchen screen is these two translated into restaurant terms: order management follows Boon Fresh's logic, real-time notification follows Ambalaj Cini's push infrastructure. We haven't yet combined this end-to-end in a restaurant project — we say that plainly, describing what we'd build rather than claiming delivery.
We start by mapping the kitchen's actual workflow — table count, menu category count, which screen or device the kitchen will use. The customer side is built as a mobile web interface with no app download required; the kitchen screen is a separate view running on a tablet or fixed display. Whether payment is taken at the table or at the register changes the flow — we decide that together up front. Scope depends on table count and menu complexity; a small cafe might need just a simple QR menu, while a busy restaurant prioritizes a kitchen screen and stock-based menu updates sooner.
What this solution includes
- Table-specific QR code — a customer opens their own table's menu, and the order is automatically tied to that table.
- Direct ordering — the customer picks from the menu and places the order from their own phone, without waiting for a server.
- Kitchen screen — an incoming order lands in the kitchen instantly, no paper ticket or verbal handoff needed.
- Real-time status updates — similar to the web push infrastructure we built into Ambalaj Cini, the table gets notified the moment the order is ready.
- Menu management panel — price changes or an item running out update instantly, so a customer never orders something that's gone.
